Christian Man in Pakistan Beaten to Death by Police Seeking Extortion Money

06/11/2018 Pakistan (Morning Star News) – Poor Christians in Pakistan commonly see police target them for extortion on false charges, and last week such a case ended in the death of a 24-year-old Christian, relatives said.

On the assumption that Christians with few legal resources can be targeted with impunity in the 96-percent Muslim country, policemen on May 29 killed Waqas Masih when his uncle refused their demand for money after they threatened to file false charges, the relatives said. Police are now pressuring the family to drop the murder case, they said.

The slain young man’s mother, a widow who belongs to a Pentecostal church, told Morning Star News that three policemen forced their way into the home of her brother, rickshaw driver Saleem Masih, in in Punjab Province’s Haider Colony, Gujrat District. Saleem Masih had recruited Waqas Masih and other relatives to help him with a construction project at his residence.

“Around 6 p.m., I was informed that three policemen had beaten my son to death,” Khalida Bibi, a sweeper at a hospital, told Morning Star News. “The police are now mounting pressure on us to ‘reconcile’ with their accused colleagues. They were initially reluctant to even arrest the accused, but eventually they had to take them into custody when we threatened to launch protests.”

Saleem Masih’s son, Emmanuel Saleem, told Morning Star News that he and other relatives were sitting in the courtyard of their home when three officers identified only as Shoaib, Shehbaz and Saqib forced their way in around 5:15 p.m.

“We asked them what they wanted, to which they said that they had information that we are drug peddlers and that they had raided the house to recover the narcotics,” he said, adding that the allegation was frivolous as the three policemen were notorious for blackmailing poor people in the area.

“We are poor Christians, but we earn our livelihood with honesty and integrity,” Emmanuel Saleem said. “We knew that the policemen were there for extorting money, but since we had done nothing wrong, my father chose to confront them rather than succumb to their blackmail.”

A heated argument ensued between his father and the police, and they began threatening to file false charges against him and other family members, he said.

“This must have panicked Waqas, who ran outside the house,” Emmanuel Saleem said. “The three cops ran after him, as did my other cousins, Qaiser and Dawood. The cops got hold of Waqas soon after and started hitting him mercilessly with punches, kicks and gun butts. Qaiser and Dawood tried to save Waqas from the police torture, but they were pushed back and warned not to intervene in the beating.”

His two cousins had returned to the house to tell his father what had happened when the policemen arrived and told them to check on Waqas Masih, saying he was “feigning illness,” Emmanuel Saleem said.

“We immediately rushed toward Waqas and saw him lying on the street, motionless,” he said, adding that he had already died by the time they arrived (Go To Here).

Christian Family from Pakistan Begs British Prime Minister for Asylum

Dear Prime Minister, please grant this family their request.

06/12/2018 Pakistan (BBC) – A Christian man who has spent six years seeking asylum has appealed to the prime minister to allow him and his family to stay in the UK.

Maqsood Bakhsh fled Pakistan in 2012 with his wife and two sons after Islamic extremists threatened to kill him because of his religious beliefs.

They now live in Glasgow and fear their lives would be in danger if they returned to Pakistan.

The Home Office said every asylum case was assessed on its individual merits.

It said officials would contact the Bakhsh family to discuss their circumstances after their case was highlighted by the Church of Scotland.

The catalyst for Mr Bakhsh leaving Pakistan with his wife Parveen, their sons Somer and Areebs – then aged nine and seven – was the murder of two Christians shot outside a court in Faisalabad in 2010.

Pastor Rashid Emmanuel, 32, and Sajid, 24, were accused of writing a pamphlet critical of the Prophet Muhammad that flouted Pakistan’s controversial blasphemy law, which carries the death penalty.

Mr Bakhsh, 50, claims the people responsible for the deaths believed he was in league with the two men and would kill him and his family if they had the chance.

The Home Office has rejected the family’s previous asylum applications and they have now been told they have exhausted the process and have no right to appeal.

However, they plan to launch a legal challenge (Go To Here).

Fire Erupts in Egyptian Church

More demonstrations of my Egyptian brethren in Christ being horribly persecuted during Ramadan:

06/13/2018 Egypt (Fides) – The flames of an accidental fire burst in a church in the middle of the night which led to the imam of the nearby mosque to use the speakers of the Muslim place of worship to sound the alarm and call everyone to intervene to extinguish the flames. This is what happened in Shubra al Khaymah, in the northern area of the great urban area of Cairo, during the night between 10 and 11 June.

Around midnight, the flames reached the wooden scaffolding put up for the works of reconstruction around the Orthodox Coptic church of Anba Makar. The alarm in the neighborhood was launched by Sheikh El Jamea, imam of the nearby mosque, who called the population to intervene to try and extinguish the fire. Among the first to rush and to try to contain the damage caused by the flames were many young Muslims who were eating together.

Anba Morcos, Coptic Orthodox Bishop of Shubra al Khaymah, publicly thanked the imam for the promptness of his intervention, presented now by Egyptian media as a concrete example of the spontaneous attitude of the Egyptian people to build social relations of peaceful and supportive coexistence(Go here).

Coptic Christians Forced to Observe Ramadan

With a religion like Islam which coerces people into the faith, I’m not shocked my Egyptian brethren in Christ are being forced to observe a holiday they don’t celebrate:

06/14/2018 Egypt (World Watch Monitor) – In one of three incidents reported to World Watch Monitor, an Egyptian photographer was detained by police for carrying a bottle of water during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, when Muslims are required not to eat or drink anything from the first light of dawn until sunset. He claims he was targeted because of his Christian faith.

Hani Shamshoun Girgis, 31, arrived at Giza railway station on 5 June to continue his way to the office of the Tahrir newspaper where he works, when he was approached by a police officer and asked to present his ID.

Girgis told World Watch Monitor that as soon as the officer found out through his ID that he was a Christian, he started searching his bag.

“There was a bottle of water inside my bag and, while he was searching it, he was staring at this bottle with anger,” Girgis said. “He took my ID from me and asked me to follow him. When I resisted and asked where he was taking me, he started insulting me and ordered that I stopped talking — as if I was a criminal.”

At the police station, Girgis says he was told that he was arrested because of the bottle of water found in his bag.

“The officer told me, ‘Why did you have this bottle of water while we are in Ramadan?'” he recalled. “I told them I was not fasting because I was a Christian, but they insulted me and said that I would stay there until sunset and that I was not allowed to sit.”

Girgis says he then called his editor-in-chief at Tahrir newspaper, who came to the police station and saw that he was released.

“I was held at the police station for more than two hours and was dealt with in a very humiliating way for having done nothing,” Girgis said.

“When I am at work, I don’t eat or drink in front of my Muslim colleagues, as a sign of respect,” he added.

Ramy Emad, a Christian lawyer from Cairo, the Egyptian capital, told World Watch Monitor that it is illegal to arrest someone — whether Christian or Muslim — for failing to adhere to the Ramadan fast.

“What the police officer did to Hani is a crime and he must be prosecuted and fired from his position,” the lawyer said.

World Watch Monitor asked the police department of Giza railway station — where Hani was detained — for comment, but they hung up (Go Here).

Kidnapping of Coptic Christians on the Rise

I feel horrible for not posting ANYTHING about my brethren in Christ being persecuted in Muslim-majority countries during Ramadan. In Egypt, our brethren in Christ are being kidnapped and it is only increasing:

06/14/2018 Egypt (Mission Network News) –  There has been a spike in kidnappings and disappearances of Christian women and girls in rural areas of Egypt and some cities.

“What seems to be happening is that a trafficking strategy that targets Coptic Christian young ladies and forces them to convert to Islam then sell them into either into domestic care in other international locations or into the sex trade,” Open Doors’ David Curry says.

Curry shares these kidnappings are being used as a tactic to demoralize the women and to humiliate the Christian community.

According to World Watch Monitor, there were seven kidnappings of Coptic Christian women in the month of April and an eighth one on May 2. The families of these women suspect they have been kidnapped by Muslims.

One of the girls who was kidnapped, Mirna Malak Shenouda, a 16-year-old Coptic Christian girl, escaped her kidnappers.

World Watch Monitor reported she was kidnapped by two women and a man in Aswan. She had been knocked out but awoke on a train. At one of the stops, she jumped off and called her parents.

However, Shenouda’s escape and rescue are rare.

Many families of the missing girls have turned to police after disappearances, but have received minimal to no help due to religious prejudices(Continue reading).

Thankful that one of the women escaped abduction from their kidnappers. I pray that more of my brethren in Christ escape them and the abductors surrender their lives to Christ as well.

Ramadan: Persecution against our Brethren in Christ rises

This is the first time I have posted for my blog this year. I hope to continue to do so even after this period has ended.

Ramadan has begun today. For those who don't know, Ramadan is the ninth month in the lunar calendar during which Muslims fast throughout the day, eating and drinking nothing for a day (as well as abstaining from sexual intercourse if they are married).

Seems innocuous, right? Wrong. Aside from causing Muslims to steep into gluttony, it seems that when Muslims fast during this month focus more on their faith, it causes them to get more violent and target non-Muslims.

It is our brethren in Christ who feel the brunt of this violence.

The website known as The Religion of Peace calls this the Ramadan Bombathon.

Here is a video by a brother in Christ known as David Wood about the Ramadan Bombathon. I know it is a year or so old, but the message is still relevant even in 2018.

Stay tuned as I will be post article of our brethren in Christ being persecuted more than usual in Muslim lands during this period in which Muslims fast (I will also post articles our Brethren in Christ being persecuted by other sorts of people and in non-Muslim lands, but not as much). We need to pray that the Lord keeps our brethren in Christ safe and that Muslims will come to know Christ as Savior during this time.

Former Muslim Tortured in Norwegian Asylum Center

I have a lot of things to say about this article:
1. I'd like to thank the Lord Jesus Christ for drawing this guy to him and giving him the courage to leave Islam.
2. I'd also like to thank Jesus Christ for reminding us all that there are Western Muslims turning to Him even in the secular continent of Europe.
3. Muslims seem to take there month of fasting a little too seriously. Just because you're fasting doesn't mean you have to make outsiders of the faith fast as well.

NORWAY--At Hå asylmum centre, "Ali" had boiling water poured over him after converting to Christianity and not fasting during Ramadan. Now he and other converts fear for their lives.

"If you do not return to Islam, we kill you," was the message "Ali" got from other Muslims at the Hå asylum centre. He does not wish to have his face or real name published, out of fear of the Muslims at the centre. If Afghan authorities come to know about his conversion, he risks the death penalty by stoning if he is sent back to his home country(Source).

And if the Afghanis killed him they would be following their religion because the founder of their faith told them to kill anyone who leaves Islam:

Sahih al-Bukhari 6922— Allah’s Messenger said, “Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him.”

Sunan Abu Dawud 4337—The Apostle said: Kill those who change their religion.

Sunan an-Nasa’i 4025—Muhammad said: "After me there will be many calamities and much evil behavior. Whoever you see splitting away from the Jama’ah or trying to create division among the Ummah of Muhammad, then kill him, for the Hand of Allah is with the Jama’ah, and the Shaitan is with the one who splits away from the Ummah, running with him."

Sunan Ibn Majah 2535—It was narrated from Ibn Abbas that the Messenger of Allah said: “Whoever changes his religion, execute him.”

Al-Muwatta of Imam Malik 36.18.15—The Messenger of Allah said, “If someone changes his religion—then strike off his head!”

Tajikistan: Children’s participation in Christian worship and other religious activities will be banned “once Ramadan is over”

It makes me angry that Muslims are preventing my Tajikistani brethren in Christ from worshipping during their stupid month of fasting. In Bangladesh and in other countries, they're making my brethren in Christ, as well as all other non-Muslims, fast along with the Muslims; in Tajikistan they're going so far as to prevent worship of other religious groups. They're doing it so that Muslims wouldn't "be offended." Ramadan really bring out the worst of Muslims living in Majority Muslim countries.

8/16/2011 Tajikistan (Forum 18 News Service) – Although the highly controversial Law on Parental Responsibility for Education and Upbringing of Children has entered into force, state Religious Affairs officials have failed to explain to religious communities how its near-complete ban on children's participation in religious activity will be enforced. The head of the government's Religious Affairs Committee, Abdurahim Holikov, has been travelling around Tajikistan to explain the new Law to imams, together with the government-backed head of the Islamic Centre Saimukarram Abdukodirzoda, but what they said remains unclear. Several Christian communities tried to find out from the Committee at a 12 August meeting.

"Officials explained that the Law exists, but didn't explain how it will be put into practice," one Catholic told Forum 18 News Service. Hikmatullo Sayfullozoda of the Islamic Renaissance Party told Forum 18 he had heard that "the President gave a verbal instruction to local administrations not to touch people during [the Muslim holy month of] Ramadan". Sayfullozoda fears that the authorities will act once Ramadan is over at the end of August(Source).

Muslims Attack Christian Village in Egypt – 1 Murdered, Homes Looted and Torched

The Quran commands Muslims to fight, oppress and attack all non-Muslims:
Qur’an 9:29—Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the Religion of Truth, from among the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.

Qur’an 9:73—O Prophet! strive hard against the unbelievers and the hypocrites and be unyielding to them; and their abode is hell, and evil is the destination.

Qur’an 9:111—Surely Allah has bought of the believers their persons and their property for this, that they shall have the garden; they fight in Allah's way, so they slay and are slain; a promise which is binding on Him in the Taurat and the Injeel and the Quran; and who is more faithful to his covenant than Allah? Rejoice therefore in the pledge which you have made; and that is the mighty achievement.

Qur’an 9:123—O you who believe! fight those of the unbelievers who are near to you and let them find in you hardness; and know that Allah is with those who guard (against evil).

Qur’an 47:35—Be not weary and fainthearted, crying for peace, when ye should be uppermost: for Allah is with you, and will never put you in loss for your (good) deeds.

Qur'an 98:6—Verily, those who disbelieve from among the People of the Book and the idolaters, will be in the Fire of Hell, abiding therein. They are the worst of creatures.

The Hadiths command the same thing:
Sahih Muslim 33—It has been narrated on the authority of Abdullah b. Umar that the Messenger of Allah said: I have been commanded to fight against people till they testify that there is no god but Allah, that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, and they establish prayer, and pay Zakat and if they do it, their blood and property are guaranteed protection on my behalf except when justified by law, and their affairs rest with Allah.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2785—Narrated Abu Hurairah: A man came to Allah’s Messenger and said, “Guide me to such a deed as equals Jihad (in reward).” He replied, “I do not find such a deed.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 2787—Allah guarantees that He will admit the Mujahid in His Case into Paradise if he is killed, otherwise He will return him to his home safely with rewards and war booty.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 2795—Narrated Anas bin Malik: The Prophet said, “Nobody who dies and finds good from Allah (in the Hereafter) would wish to come back to this world, even if he were given the whole world and whatever is in it, except the martyr who, on seeing the superiority of martyrdom, would like to come back to the world and get killed again (in Allah’s cause).”

Sahih al-Bukhari 2796—Narrated Anas: The Prophet said, “A single endeavor (of fighting) in Allah’s cause in the afternoon or in the forenoon is better than all the world and whatever is in it.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 2797—Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet said, . . . “By Him in Whose Hands my soul is! I would love to be martyred in Allah’s Cause and then come back to life and then get martyred, and then come back to life again and then get martyred and then come back to life again and then get martyred.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 2810—Narrated Abu Musa: A man came to the Prophet and asked, “A man fights for war booty; another fights for fame and a third fights for showing off; which of them is in Allah’s Cause?” The Prophet said, “He who fights that Allah’s Word (i.e., Allah’s religion of Islamic Monotheism) be superior, is in Allah’s Cause.”

Sunan An-Nasa’i 3099—It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet said: “Whoever dies without having fought or having thought of fighting, he dies on one of the branches of hypocrisy.”

Sunan An-Nasa’i 3138—Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari said: “A Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah and said: ‘A man fights for fame, or he fights for the spoils of war, or he fights to show off. Who is the one who is fighting in the cause of Allah?’ He said: ‘The one who fights so that the word of Allah will be supreme is the one who is fighting in the cause of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime.’”


Fortunately, most Muslims live better lives than what their religion calls them to do. However, there are some who do take these violent commands seriously.

8/9/2011 Egypt (AINA) – Muslims attacked Christians in the village of Nazlet Faragallah, in the southern Egyptian Minya province, on Sunday evening. The attack continued until the early hours of Monday morning, August 8. One Copt was murdered and homes were looted and torched when Muslims from Nazlet Faragallah together with Muslims from four neighboring villages started their violence at approximately 8 PM, after breaking their Ramadan fast.

According to eyewitnesses, thousands of Muslims entered the village from all sides, firing automatic weapons (mostly in the air), looting and throwing Molotov Cocktails at several homes. "They even destroyed our irrigation pumps," said one witness. The first attack was on the house of Father Youanes, pastor of St. George Church, which lies at the head of the village. He was beaten and his home was looted and torched.

Maher Nassif Tobias (50), an employee at the local council, was murdered in his home. He was found by his son. His house was completely looted, including his livestock.

Security forces arrived 4 hours after the attack began and there were too few of them. "They only had batons in their hands, and were unable to control the situation," said a Coptic village resident. "Our village is surrounded by corn fields. The Muslims came into the village to loot and quickly disappeared in the fields, the police could not follow them. They were coming from all directions at the same time."

Nazlet Faragallah has 8000 inhabitants, 80% are Copts and 20% Muslims.

The events were preceded on Saturday by an altercation caused by Muslims harassing Christian girls as they came out of a church service in the late afternoon. Stones were hurled by Muslims at the church, breaking five windows. A "reconciliation" meeting took place. Some 200 Copts staged a sit-in in front of St. George's Church on Sunday afternoon to protest against Muslim attack on the church. In a statement tonight, the security authorities in Minya said the Muslim attack on Nazlet Faragallah was caused by a group of Copts, headed by Haddar Ishaq, firing at Muslims as they came out of the mosque on Sunday afternoon. Copts in the village denied this claim.

Three Muslims were arrested yesterday and three Copts today. None of the Copts were involved in any incident, and one of them had broken his leg two weeks before. "Security is doing its balancing act again," said one of the villagers. "They will use these Copts, who were arrested at random, to bargain for their freedom in exchange for village Copts giving up their rights during the 'reconciliation' meeting(Source)."

Mandatory Veil and Fasting as Indonesia is ‘Islamised’ During Ramadan

I knew things would get dangerous for my brothers and sisters in Christ living in Muslim majority countries. If I was a Christian living in Indonesia or any Muslim-majority country, I would really hate Ramadan. You have to abstain from food and drink (sometimes that means restaraunts need to be closed down for the whole month) in public and if you are a woman, you have to wear a veil, and it's all done to keep from  "offending" the Muslims around you. It is extremely sickening.

8/3/11 Indonesia (AsiaNews) – Wearing the veil for female public servants and fasting, including job loss if caught eating, are becoming compulsory in Indonesia. In some parts of the country, Ramadan has become a time of Islamisation with rules increasingly inspired by Sharia. For the authorities, fasting and praying have become compulsory, forcing Muslims to abstain from food and drink from dawn to dusk.

On Madura Island (East Java Province), Pamekasan District chief Kusairi issued a directive whereby all female employees must wear the jilbab, or headscarf. In order to promote conformity with Islamic principles, women street vendors have to conform to the obligation. For Kusairi, this will strengthen Muslim women’s faith.

Restaurants and nightclubs will also have to obey the rules. During Ramadan, such places must be closed during the day until dusk. Clubs, bars and places of nightly entertainment will close for the entire month.
Representatives of the extremist Islamic Defence Front (FPI) are out at night to strike against rule-breakers.

In Bengkulu District (Sumatra), Mayor Ahmad Kanesi said that any municipal workers caught breaking the fast would be fired. He offered a 1 million rupiah (US$ 118) reward to anyone who caught a Bengkulu civil servant breaking the fast.

With an estimated population of 231 million people (2009), Indonesia is the biggest Muslim country in the world. However, it is made up of different ethnic groups and has significant religious minorities.
Muslims (mostly Sunnis) represent 87 per cent of the total. Protestants are about 6.1 per cent whilst Catholics are 4 per cent. Hindus and Buddhists represent about 1 per cent(Source).

Threats of Increased Violence during Ramadan Christians Urged to Pray

I was in a Christian chat room on Paltalk on July 31st telling my brothers and sisters in Christ to pray for our brethren in Christ living in Muslim lands during Ramadan, because persecution against them escalates during this time. Their response? "Bring us some proof for increased violence towards Christians Jabari!!!!!!," they responded. They didn't believe that violence against our brothers and sisters in Christ living in Muslim lands steps up a notch or two during the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan. Well here's my proof of what I've been saying:

8/2/2011 Middle East(ChristianPost) - Ramadan, the 30-day annual Islamic fast which begins next week, may expose Christians to an increased risk of persecution in Muslim-majority countries and believers in the West should pray for them.

“Ramadan is a time when Christians are especially isolated in some Muslim-dominated countries,” said Open Doors USA President Dr. Carl Moeller in a statement. “This is why it is so important for us to unite in prayer for persecuted Christians throughout the world.”

To help Christians pray for the persecuted, Open Doors has prepared a Ramadan Prayer Calendar having multiple prayer points and designed to help believers pray for vulnerable Christians around the world during the 30 days.

The group, which has served the persecuted church worldwide since 1955 when its founder Brother Andrew smuggled Bibles into Eastern Europe for the first time, will also send out daily emails with a story from a Muslim-dominated country, prayer requests, and a call to action. Open Doors has provided a link on its website for believers to register.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar which begins August 1 this year, is the time when most Muslims fast from dawn until dusk, seeking to shed their sins through acts of restraint as they believe this is a time of purification accomplished through good deeds and self-control.

However, “the observance of Ramadan could increase pressure on believers,” Moeller said.

Ramadan brings with it violence at times. Some governments in Islamic countries forcibly enforce observance of Ramadan and extremist groups increase their vigilante activities against both non-abiding Muslims and non-Muslims, and tend to become more intolerant toward them.

During the last Ramadan, an imam in Egypt in Shimi village near Giza called for “jihad” against Christians leading to persecution of Copts, according to the Assyrian International News Agency. In 2009, an American service member in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul was shot at by an Afghan police officer for drinking water publicly during Ramadan, The Associated Press had reported.

Particularly this year, when a wave of uprisings is underway in parts of the Middle East and North Africa, the threat of increased violence is real as protests are expected to intensify. Especially in Egypt, where Copts have come under attack following the fall of the Hosni Mubarak regime in February, more violence against Christians is expected.

Pakistan has beefed up security ahead of Ramadan apprehending tensions around mosques and other places of worship, according to The Nation, a Pakistani newspaper(Source).

Yes, things are going to be extra rough for our brethren in Christ Jesus living in majority Muslim lands during Ramadan. I ask all my brothers in Christ to pray for our brethren living in Muslim countries.

Ramadan 2011

Tomorrow begins the Ramadan for our Muslim friends all over the world.

For those who don't know, Ramadan is the month of the year which Muslims fast from sun-up till sun-down. They do not let any food or drink enter into their lips during that time. In the evening, the fast is broken by an Iftaar dinner at the end of each day. Ramadan is so important that even people who are considered nominal Muslims are devout in fasting during this month. At the end of the month, there is Eid ul-Fitr, which celebrates the month of Ramadan. The fasting during Ramadan is so essetial to the Muslim faith that it is part of what is called the Five Pillars of Islam. It makes up the core of the practices of the religion.

Now, why do I mention mention Ramadan on a blog concerning the persecution of our brothers and sisters in Christ? I mention it because, as many of you have probably noticed, the majority of the persecution against Christians takes place in Muslim lands. When Ramadan comes around, our brothers and sisters in Christ and all other non-Muslims are forbidden from eating or drinking in public, in case they "offend" the Muslim who are fasting. On a much more dangerous note, violence against our brothers and sisters in Christ seems to increase during this month of Fasting. I ask of my brothers and sisters in Christ to pray for our brethren in Christ Islamic lands. Pray that:
- There's an outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Muslims all over the world, but especially in countries where they make up the majority, during this month.
-Jesus Christ will keep his followers living in majority Muslim countries from extreme persecution and if he doesn't, that he keeps them through the persecution they may go through.
