Syrian believers now threatened

10/9/2011 Syria (OneNewsNow) – Christians in Syria need to be remembered in prayer during that country's civil turmoil. As part of the violence and other turmoil in that country, the general population has suffered job losses and increased prices. Open Doors USA spokesman Jerry Dykstra tells OneNewsNow that Christians among the population are suffering as well.

"More so perhaps than the regular population," he adds, "so there's a great need for goods [and] for food ... so we need to uplift the Christian community there, which numbers about ten percent of the country -- which is a significant amount, 1.9 million people."

Latest figures show at least 2,700 people have been killed and many thousands more arrested in an effort to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad.

"... [Christians in Syria] really been pretty well protected by that president," Dykstra explains. "Of course al-Assad is now under tremendous pressure and fire."

According to the ministry spokesman, if al-Assad is overthrown, Sharia law may be implemented -- which will further threaten Syrian Christians(Source).
